Project Gwrhyr

Welcome to Project Gwrhyr!

The goal of this project is to collect together electronic versions of Middle Welsh grammars, lexica, and texts. All of the data will be free: free of charge and free of copyright or other intellectual property restrictions. It is modelled on the Germanic Lexicon Project started by Sean Crist.

The project is named for Gwrhyr Gwalstawd Ieithoedd: Gwrhyr, the Interpreter of Tongues. He appears in the tale Culhwch ac Olwen where he is one of Arthur's knights. Gwrhyr can speak and understand the languages of both Men and Beasts. He is also known as The Challenger — a fitting moniker indeed when dealing with a language like Welsh!

The first book I'm working on is John Strachan's An Introduction to Early Welsh published in 1909. Stay tuned for more information.
